참새와 죄수

평생 감옥을 제 집 드나들듯 한 늙은 장기수가 있었다.
틈만 나면 수감되는 그에게
처음에는 가족과 친지가 방문했지만
나중에는 아무도 그를 찾아오지 않게 되었다.
오직 고독만이 그의 유일한 벗이 되었다.

그러던 어느 날,
그가 머무는 창살 너머로 참새 한 마리가 날아들었다.
늙은 죄수는 참새에게 빵부스러기를 주면서
처음으로 정이 무엇인지를 느낄 수 있었다.

참새는 고개를 갸웃거리면서
죄수가 주는 음식을 쪼아 먹고
뾰로롱 뾰로롱 노래를 부르곤 했다.

그러나 행복은 오래 가지 않는다고 했던가…
이 늙은 죄수는 곧
먼 바다의 외딴 섬에 있는 감옥으로 이송되게 되었다.

참새와 떨어지기 싫었던 늙은 죄수는
나뭇가지와 철사 부스러기를 주워서
조그마한 조롱을 만들었다.
조롱을 가슴에 품고 외딴 섬으로 가는 배에 탄 늙은 죄수…

하지만 죄수들끼리 밀고 당기는 혼잡 속에서
그만 그의 허술한 조롱은 부서지구
그 순간 놀란 참새는 푸르르 날라 올랐다.
그러나 오래 날지 못하고
그만 바다 위로 떨어지고 말았다.

참새가 조롱에서 빠져나와 달아 날까봐
늙은 죄수가 참새의 꼬리를 잘랐기 때문이다.

“내 새가 빠졌어요. 새를 건져주세요!”

늙은 죄수는 울부짖었지만 아무도 귀를 기울이지 않았다.
새 한 마리를 건지기 위해
커다란 배가 멈출 수는 없는 일이었다.

늙은 죄수는 배의 갑판에서 조금씩 날개를 파닥이는
가여운 새를 비통하게 바라보고 있었지만
이내 새는 더 이상 움직이지 않았다.
