영등포구 최의영님의 글을 소개할게요…

열두 살 아들과 함께 급히 지하철을 갈아타다가
아이는 미처 타지 못하고
저만 전동차에 올라탄 적이 있었습니다.

멀어지는 아이의 모습…
아들에게는 가벼운 자폐 증세가 있었습니다.
혹시나 이렇게 생이별을 하게 되는 건 아닌가
너무 놀라고 당황한 저는
얼른 아들에게 전화를 걸었습니다.

“민아, 네 옆에 아줌마 계시지?”

혹시 그쪽 승강장에
아주머니 한 분은 계시지 않을까 하는
절박한 생각에서 나온 말이었습니다.

“여보세요, 무슨 일이지요?”
순간, 거짓말처럼 한 아주머니의 목소리가 들려왔습니다.

다급했던 저는 아들과 함께 전철에 타달라고,
다음 정거장 앞에서 기다리겠다고 간곡하게 부탁했습니다.

“아이고, 걱정 말고 기다려요. 내가 꼭 내려줄게요.”

한 치의 망설임도 없는 아주머니의 대답에
저도 모르게 눈물이 왈칵 쏟아졌습니다.

드디어 열차가 승강장으로 들어오고,
민이의 모습을 발견한 저는
정신없이 달려가 꼭 껴안았습니다.

무사히 다시 만났다는 것에 안도하는 사이
전철은 승강장을 떠났습니다.
저는 정신을 차리고 바로 아주머니를 찾았지만
그분은 보이지 않았습니다.
내리시지 않고 그냥 가셨던 것이었습니다.

저는 출발해 버린 열차를 향해
수없이 고개를 숙이며 감사의 인사를 드렸습니다.
얼굴은 비록 뵙지 못했지만,
세상 그 누구의 목소리보다 따뜻했던
그 분의 목소리를 영원히 잊을 수 없을 것 같습니다.

세상에는 친절하고 마음이 따뜻한 분들이
참 많이 계십니다.
짐이 무거워 낑낑대고 있을 때
말없이 손을 빌려주시던 아저씨,
넘어졌을 때 괜찮으시냐며 도와주시던 아주머니,
떨어진 물건이라며 주워주는 꼬마까지.
믿어 보세요,
세상은 여전히 따뜻하답니다.

a warm voice

won the grand prize at the Seoul Metro Storytelling Contest.
Let me introduce Choi Eui-young’s writing in Yeongdeungpo-gu.

I was in a hurry to change trains with my 12-year-old son.
The child couldn’t get on.
I was the only one on the train.

The image of a child moving away…
My son had mild autism.
I was worried that I might break up like this.
I was so surprised and flustered.
I called my son right away.

“MINA, there’s a lady next to you, right?”

Do you happen to be at the platform…
I think there will be an old lady.
It came from a desperate thought.

“Hello, what’s the matter?”
For a moment, I heard a woman’s voice, like a lie.

I was in a hurry, so I asked my son to get on the train with me.
I said I’d wait in front of the next station.I sincerely asked for it.

“Oh, don’t worry about it and wait.I’ll make sure to drop you off.”

In the lady’s unhesitating reply,
Tears welled up in my eyes.

At last the train entered the platform,
I discovered Min’s image.
I ran like crazy and hugged him tightly.

While I was relieved to see you again,
The train left the platform.
I came to my senses and found her right away,
He was out of sight.
They didn’t get off, they just left.

I’m heading for the train that left.
I bowed my head countless times and thanked you.
though I could not see his face,
It was warmer than anyone else’s voice.
I’ll never forget his voice.

People who are kind and warm-hearted in the world
There are so many people.
When I was struggling because of the heavy burden,
The man who lent me his hand without saying a word,
The lady who helped me when I fell down, asking if I was okay,
Even a little boy picked it up for me, saying it was a falling object.
Believe me,
The world is still warm.
