아름다운 꼴찌들

가을 운동회날이 되었습니다.
초등학교에 다니는 내내 꼴찌만 했던 아이가 있습니다.
6학년 기국이입니다.

연골무형성증이라는
지체장애 6급의 병을 앓고 있는 기국이..
또래들보다 작고 통통하다보니
다른 아이들보다 체육 성적이 좋지만은 않습니다.

초등학교 마지막 운동회도 꼴찌로 장식하겠거니,
안타깝지만 기국이 주변의 사람들은
그렇게 생각하고 있었습니다.

다섯 명이 출발했습니다.
여전히 마지막 주자로 달리는 기국이..
이번에도 아마 꼴찌를 면하지 못할 것만 같습니다.

그런데 이게 웬일인가요.

나머지 아이들이 출발한 지 30미터 정도 지난 뒤
갑자기 멈춰서서, 기국이를 기다렸습니다.

아이들은 꼴찌로 달려오던
기국이 손을 잡고 함께 뛰기 시작했습니다.

6년 동안 항상 꼴찌를 도맡던 친구를 위해,
4명의 친구들이 깜짝 선물을 계획한 것입니다.

기국이와 친구들은 결승선까지 다 같이 들어와
공동 1등을 했습니다.
처음 1등을 해 본 기국이는
감격하고 친구들이 고마워서
그만 울음을 터뜨렸습니다.

이를 지켜보던 가족들도 눈물을 멈추지 못했습니다.

이 세상은 치열한 경쟁구조지만
서로 조금씩만 양보하면
모두가 1등을 할 수 있다는 것을
초등학생들이 가르쳐주는군요…
