세계적으로 널리 알려져 있는 자동차 왕 ‘헨리 포드’와
당시 전기 분야의 전문가였던 ‘스타인 맥스’가 있었던 일입니다.

스타인 맥스는
미시간주에 있는 헨리 포드의 첫 번째 공장에
큰 발전기를 설치했습니다.

어느 날 이 발전기가 고장이 나서
공장 전체의 가동이 중단됐습니다.
수많은 수리공과 전기공들을 불렀지만 고칠 수가 없었죠.

결국 포드는 스타인 맥스를 불렀습니다.

그는 도착하자 여기저기를 살핍니다.
힘들여 일한 것도 아닌데
마침내 공장은 재가동이 되었습니다.

며칠 뒤, 포드는 스타인 맥스로부터
만 달러의 입금 청구서를 받습니다.
당시로써는 상당한 거금이었죠.

‘대충 몇 군데 두드려 보고 고친 비용이 너무 비싸군…’

포드는 청구서에 이런 메모를 붙여서 돌려보냅니다.
“이 청구서의 금액은
당신이 몇 시간 모터를 두드리면서 고친 것에 비해
너무 비싼 것이 아닙니까?”

스타인 맥스로부터의 답장은 이랬습니다.
“모터를 두드리며 일한 임금이 10달러,
어디를 두드려야 할지를 알아낸 것이 9,990달러,
합계 일 만 달러.”

물론 포드는 그 금액을 다 지불했습니다.
